Height is measured with the bird standing and its head up. Almost half of that height is neck, as Britannica describes. The body itself sits roughly level with an adult’s chest.
That long neck is why an ostrich can meet your eye from several metres away. It also lets the bird see trouble coming across open grassland.

A male weighs 100 to 130 kg (220 to 287 lb). A female weighs 90 to 110 kg (198 to 242 lb).

Why is an ostrich so big?
An ostrich is far too heavy to fly. It is built to run instead, on long, thick, powerful legs, as the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance describes.
One stride can cover 3 to 5 m (10 to 16 ft). The bird holds a steady 50 km/h (31 mph) and sprints at 70 km/h (43 mph). That places it among the fastest animals in the world.
Its feet carry only two toes, fewer than any other bird. The larger toe takes most of the weight and works almost like a hoof.
Height pays off in another way. An ostrich eye measures almost 5 cm (2 in) across, the largest of any land animal. From 2.5 m up, the bird scans a long way over flat grassland.
Chicks grow into that body fast. A month-old ostrich can already run at close to 56 km/h (35 mph), and birds are full grown well before they breed at three or four years old.
